The Old Man's Records
(Denis Keldie/James Wallace)

He came here barely turned eighteen
Just off the boat to chase a dream
Worked long days at the factory mill
Three mouths to feed and endless bills;
Homesick feelings now and then
The music helped him ease the pain
He'd play those records all night long
Smiling when he heard those songs.

The Old Man's Records were 78's
He’d play 'em loud and he'd play 'em late
Melodies and simple words
The sweetest sounds he'd ever heard;
Those old man's records went round and round
I’d watch 'em spin ’til I fell down
Scratched and worn but sweet and clear
He'd raise a glass and shed a tear.

Galway Bay and Danny Boy
That beautiful sadness filled with joy
My Love is Like A Red, Red Rose
The heart lives where the music goes...

Music from the olden days
From the land he left so far away
Fiddles and accordions
Jigs and reels from days long gone;
He always talked of going home
To see once more the place he'd known
Those records made him laugh and cry
He played them ’til the day he died.

Galway Bay and Danny Boy
That beautiful sadness filled with joy
My Love is Like A Red, Red Rose
The heart lives where the music goes...

When I was young it sounded old
Surely wasn't rock and roll
Never listened much to those songs
’Til it finally sunk in that he was gone;
I see his face when he was young
When I hear those old time ballads sung
I raise a glass and call his name
And the music takes us home again...
